Let’s face it, happiness often takes work! In our busy world filled with endless bad news and our own life struggles, happiness can seem elusive.

But the truth is, you are in charge of your own happiness. It’s up to you to figure out what makes you happy and to cultivate a daily practice of focusing on things that make you feel your best.

Here are some ideas for your happiness practice.

Embrace an attitude of gratitude

Being purposeful about being grateful changes your outlook! Take a few moments every day to find things for which you are thankful. Grab a notebook and create a journal, or say the things out loud while driving on your commute home (or just in your head if you’re on public transportation). Aim for at least three items, but don’t let a number stop you from listing more.

Exercise for fun

Finding a physical activity that you love is a great way to increase your happiness. Maybe you’re drawn to group exercise; if so, there are plenty of opportunities to join a class. Apps like ClassPass make it easy for you to find classes to try out in your area.

Prefer to be introspective while you’re exercising? Walking around a local park and hiking somewhere solo are excellent exercise options. You can even release any pent-up negative energy in a kickboxing class.

Say no

Only you know your limits and your boundaries. Let others know about them! Don’t be afraid to decline a request for help or an invitation to go somewhere if your heart’s not in it. If you’re not feeling something, just say no — you don’t even need to offer an explanation or a justification.

Do good

Your life is busy, but doing good for others is priceless, and organizations are always grateful for any time or resources you can offer. Find opportunities that bring you greater happiness, whether that means volunteering to walk shelter dogs or delivering food to the homeless. Schedule time to do it. Volunteer Match is a great way to find volunteer opportunities in your area.

Fake it til you make it

Maybe it seems ridiculous, but smile! Offering a smile is a signal that you’re welcoming, which in turn may create an opportunity for a genuinely enjoyable experience. Displaying a smile opens our hearts and souls to possibilities.

Be intentional

Be aware of the moment and be present in it. If you buy a coworker a cup of coffee, hand it over with a genuine feeling of happiness for that person. Engage in conversations when you can be fully present for them.

Pursue your passion

Make time to do something you enjoy. Schedule it on your calendar if you must, but take that time. Don’t be afraid to take classes at your local college or online to discover new passions. Whether it’s a more common interest, such as photography, or a less common one, such as beekeeping, finding an enjoyable hobby can help you be more joyful in life.

Meditate

Meditation allows time to reflect and think deeply. You can find podcasts or apps like Calm to guide you through a session, or you can attend a group class. Meditation can help you achieve balance, peace, and happiness.

Accept a challenge

Whether it’s leaping into that new business venture or shooting over the treetops on a zipline, accepting a challenge is invigorating, and conquering it can feel wonderful! Take a leap — what you’re capable of may surprise you.

Laugh a lot

Laughing releases chemicals that make you feel good, and feeling good leads to greater happiness. So, take any opportunities to laugh with friends, see a funny movie, or participate in a hilarious game night.

Try a few of the above, or try them all. All that matters is that you create practices that will help you achieve authentic happiness in your life.
